California Project LEAN recently received the 2004 Secretary's Innovation in Prevention Awards from the Department of Health and Human Services, Office of the Secretary in a ceremony held in Washington D. C. December 7, 2004. The award was to recognize the "Successful Students Through Healthy Food Policies" project, designed to increase school boards development and adoption of healthy nutrition policies. The project was conducted by California Project LEAN in partnership with the California School Boards Association.
"Successful Students through Healthy Food Policies is a leader in promoting healthier lifestyles for California's students," said Secretary Tommy Thompson. "Students who are properly nourished are better prepared to learn, making the benefit life-long."
This award program is part of a broader Departmental initiative called Steps to a Healthier U.S. that advances President George W. Bush's HealthierUS goal of helping Americans live longer, better, and healthier lives. The Secretary's Innovation in Prevention Awards Initiative identifies and celebrates outstanding organizations that have implemented innovative and creative chronic disease prevention and health promotion programs that address at least one of the following risk factors: Obesity; physical activity; and nutrition.
